What’s on in September: Resident Organisation Round Up

As the centre for Books, Writing and Ideas, we are host to some fantastic arts and culture organisations.

Within the Wheeler Centre building lives Australian Poetry, Blak & Bright, Melbourne City of Literature Office, Emerging Writers’ Festival, Express Media, Freeplay Independent Games Festival, Melbourne Writers Festival, PEN Melbourne, the Small Press Network and Writers Victoria. Beneath the Wheeler Centre you can enjoy a European culinary escape at Italian inspired restaurant The Moat.

The City of Literature Office

Melbourne UNESCO City of Literature Office and Vibe Union presents the Melbourne heat for the global spoken word event Slam-O-Vision. This Eurovision-inspired event brings cities from around the world together online to celebrate poetry. 15 poets will perform on Wednesday, 27 September, representing the diverse voices and communities that make up our beautiful city. Expect powerful stories, expert wordplay, and hard-hitting performances typical of Melbourne poets. Tickets and more info are available here.

PEN Melbourne

PEN Melbourne is united in a common concern for the art of writing and freedom of expression. They are currently campaigning for the freedom of Julian Assange, a cause you can support by signing the letter to Ambassador Kennedy here. Writers Victoria

When considering a career in writing, no one ever tells you that you need to know how to perform. Bookshop and library events, writers festivals, school visits, and genre celebrations are part of a writing life and are a great way to connect with readers and other writers.

Doing it well is a skill, like any other, that you can learn. In Speaking about Writing, Kelly Gardiner will help give your skills and confidence the boost you’ve been seeking.
