An esteemed panel of experts come together to discuss why we must fight to protect freedom of expression in the face of increasing attempts to censor and silence critical voices.
In Australia and around the world, human rights and freedom of expression are increasingly under attack – and writers who speak truth to power or challenge the status quo find themselves targeted by those seeking to supress inconvenient truths.
This session brings together journalist Mary Kostakidis, writer and educator Micaela Sahar and human rights lawyer Sarah Schwartz for a galvanising discussion about the fundamental right to report peacefully and without fear of being silenced. They reflect on their experiences, concerns and ideas for action around the right to freedom of expression and share what motivates them to keep doing their work, even at great personal cost.
Together with host Daniel James, they highlight the urgent imperative to protect writers and journalists’ right to free speech, dissent and open political discourse.
Presented in partnership with PEN Melbourne thanks to support from the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund
