Founded in 2009 to honour Melbourne's rich storytelling tradition, The Wheeler Centre emerged from the city’s recognition as a UNESCO City of Literature in 2008.
Situated in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD on the lands of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation, The Wheeler Centre acknowledges over 40,000 years of storytelling in Naarm (Melbourne) and Victoria, paying homage to a deep and continuous cultural legacy.
The Wheeler Centre is a vital and unique part of Victoria’s creative culture, bringing books, storytelling and ideas to the centre of everyday life. As a registered charity, we are more than just a space for ideas — we are an inclusive gathering point where diverse voices flourish, stories find their audiences and words foster empathy and connection.

How to leave a bequest
A bequest can be made through your will at any time. Every little bit helps to support our mission, and you can pledge as little or as much as you like.
