Omar El Akkad joins Antoinette Lattouf at Queenscliffe Literary Festival to discuss One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This – his searing indictment of Western hypocrisy and a bold reckoning with the collapse of its moral narrative.
In conversation with Antoinette Lattouf, the Egyptian-Canadian journalist and award-winning novelist Omar El Akkad reflects on how recent global flashpoints – the Black Lives Matter protests, the climate crisis and continuing violence in the Middle East – have reshaped his understanding of power, migration and justice.
Sparked by a viral tweet during the bombardment of Gaza – viewed over 10 million times – El Akkad’s new book, One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This, confronts the dissonance between Western ideals and political reality, questioning what it means to live in societies that have strayed so far from the values they claim to uphold.
Praised by Richard Flanagan as ‘a howl from the heart of our age’, El Akkad’s work is both a critique and a call – for accountability, for clarity, and ultimately, for hope.
