We all know Jonathan Franzen is a twitcher. But did you know Tom Hanks likes to collect 1940s typewriters? Or that Johnny Depp likes to play with dolls?
Sadly, Tom and the two Johnnies couldn’t join us, but Sam Pang has persuaded some almost as familiar faces to reveal their unlikely obsessions.
In the final edition for 2012, comedian Bob Franklin shares his passion for heavy metal while musician Kram – drummer of nineties alt-rock heroes Spiderbait – professes his love for a different kind of racket: tennis.
Always diverse, occasionally devilish, the one thing you can expect from Unexpected Passions is an evening of laid-back laughs, with wizard of wit Sam Pang at the helm.
Featuring
Sam Pang
Sam Pang is a writer, presenter and broadcaster. His television credits include the hugely popular Santo, Sam and Ed’s Cup Fever and SBS’s coverage of The Eurovision Song Contest.
2012 sees Sam co-hosting Santo, Sam and Ed’s Sports Fever on Channel 7 and will also be seen in Agony Uncles on ABC1.
Previously, he hosted the history based comedy quiz show, ADbc, and for the past 3 years he has been the co-host of SBS’s coverage of The Eurovision Song Contest. In 2011 he was a creative consultant and writer for the The Marngrook Footy Show on ABC2.
Sam’s work in radio has seen him work for a variety of stations including Triple R, 3AW, ABC and Radio National.
In 2010 he was named in The Age Magazine as one of Melbourne’s Top 100 most influential, inspirational and creative people for the year.
Bob Franklin
Bob Franklin is a highly respected writer, actor and comedian (perhaps most recognisable from The Librarians, Stupid Stupid Men and Thank God You’re Here).
He recently wrote and directed a short film called Corrections and has several other projects in pipelines. Bob’s work has been described in The Age as ‘genuinely subversive, dank and nasty’ and by the Herald Sun as ‘particularly dreadful’.
The stories in his debut collection Under Stones are not horror per se; they are much more unsettling than that. They are tales of unease set in familiar surrounds and whispered in your ear by a friendly stranger.
Kram
Kram is best-known as Spiderbait’s co-vocalist and percussive lynchpin.
He’s long had a restless creative energy that’s seen him take part in numerous side-projects, including the rock & roll supergroup The Wrights and Hot Rollers, as well as helping propel Spiderbait to a prominent place in the Australian rock canon. With over half a million records sold and an enduring live popularity, Spiderbait is both a natural starting point and a full stop.
His solo album Mix Tape is, according to Kram, the soundtrack for a road trip, with each tune moving you down the road and across the musical spectrum. The only problem is that the listener may be tempted to pull over and simply enjoy what they’re hearing.
