Phoenix and Nel have superpowers. They take a lot of care and do a lot of good. But when celebrity chef Rae arrives at one of their weekly support meetings she turns their world upside down. As they transform from stealth crusaders to global superstars their powers ramp up exponentially. It's amazing! Until it isn't.
Hilarious, poignant and strange, Super examines our urge to do good and what happens when this effort comes up against the relentless force of capitalism.
If we are super, what is the cost?
Super was shortlisted for the Queensland Premier's Drama Award.
Judges’ Report
In the alt-reality world of Super, we follow characters who are less Marvel and more in need of a support group – a gleeful premise well supported by assured writing. Refreshing in its experiment with genre and form, Super is underpinned by timely questions around care and feminism under capitalism. Chewy and entertaining, the play's critique of a culture that venerates power and hero narratives will resonate with many today.
