Tiriki Onus

Tiriki Onus is a proud Yorta Yorta and Dja Dja Wurrung artist, filmmaker, opera singer and academic. He serves as Head of the Wilin Centre for Indigenous Arts and Cultural Development at the University of Melbourne.

Tiriki’s multi-disciplinary practice explores the power of storytelling to challenge historical narratives and drive cultural revitalisation. He co-directed the critically acclaimed, award-winning documentary Ablaze (2021). The film uncovers the legacy of his grandfather, civil rights leader Bill Onus, who is believed to have made the first ever film by an Aboriginal filmmaker.

Through his diverse creative work, Tiriki continuously advocates for First Nations creative sovereignty and self-determination, positioning Indigenous voices firmly at the center of global cinema and contemporary art.
