About

Born in Brisbane, Stephen is a descendant of the Nunukul people and the Munaldjali clan of the Yugambeh tribe from southeast Queensland. He is a dancer and choreographer and in 2008, was named NSW Australian of the Year.

Stephen began his professional dancing career with Sydney Dance Company and in 1991 was appointed Artistic Director of Bangarra Dance Theatre. For The Australian Ballet, Stephen has choreographed Rites to Stravinsky’s score and directed Indigenous sections for the Sydney Olympics opening and closing ceremonies. Stephen’s film credits include numerous music video clips, and choreography for the feature films Bran Nue Dae and The Sapphires.
