Anthony J. Spires

Anthony J. Spires is Professor of Contemporary Chinese Studies at the University of Melbourne and Deputy Associate Dean, International for China, in the Faculty of Arts. His research focuses on the development of civil society in China, including philanthropy, regulation and the cultures of non-profit organisations. He has published widely in leading academic journals, including The American Journal of Sociology, The China Journal, China Quarterly and Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly. His most recent books include Global Civil Society and China, published in 2024 by Cambridge University Press, and Everyday Democracy: Civil Society, Youth and the Struggle Against Authoritarian Culture in China, also published in 2024 by Columbia University Press. A graduate of Occidental College, Anthony holds three masters degrees and a PhD in Sociology from Yale University.
