Alison Lester is the author and illustrator of some of Australia’s most well-loved and bestselling children’s books.
Over her long career she has produced such picture book classics as the Clive Eats Alligators series, Magic Beach, Imagine, Are We There Yet? and Noni the Pony, as well as novels including The Quicksand Pony and The Snow Pony.
Alison’s picture books mix imaginary worlds with everyday life, encouraging children to believe in themselves, celebrating the differences that make them special. She is involved in many community art projects and spends part of every year travelling to remote indigenous communities, encouraging children and adults to write and draw about their own lives.
During 2012-2013, Alison Lester and Boori Monty Pryor share the prestigious position of inaugural Australian Children’s Laureate. Alison is an ambassador for both the National Year of Reading 2012 and for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
Alison’s Australian classic picture book Are We There Yet? Was chosen as the focus book for the National Year of Reading, and an exhibition of her artwork for this book has visited every state of Australia throughout 2012.
