Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s first novel, the reflective and loosely-structured Narrative of John Smith, is set to be published later this year by the British Library, the BBC reports. The novel, about a bed-ridden man’s reflections on his life, was written by the creator of Sherlock Holmes when he was still in his early 20s but already a successful writer of short stories. It was lost in the post, however, en route to his publisher, and Conan Doyle instead went on to write the first Sherlock novel, A Study in Scarlet, published three years later. The rewritten Narrative of John Smith was rewritten from memory but never finished. The project has the approval of the author’s estate, which recently gave Anthony Horowitz the green light to writi a new Sherlock Holmes tome.
