Can You Close An Empty Library?

BACK

Following on the news that UK libraries are seeing large budget cuts and closures, comes the news of community-led protests against the moves. The Milton Keyes Citizen reports that the good card-holders of Stony Stratford Library decided to borrow all the books. It began with a Facebook campaign that saw the whole community supporting the protest.

According to the paper more than 16,000 books were borrowed at “an average of 378 per hour” - making for a very busy day for librarians. As satirical newspaper the Spoof sees it the libraries might just have found themselves a new funding model. They suggest “Fines for non-return of books are likely to achieve over £7m for the Milton Keynes Council.”
