David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon are the screenwriting duo behind the fourth Matrix film: The Matrix Resurrections. They are also celebrated fiction writers in their own right. Mitchell is the bestselling author of nine novels, including the Man Booker Prize-shortlisted Cloud Atlas (which was adapted to film by Lana and Lilly Wachowski in 2012). Hemon is a Macarthur Genius Grant recipient, journalist and award-winning author of novels including The Lazarus Project.
In this Postcards From Abroad digital conversation, the two friends and collaborators join screenwriter and journalist Maria Lewis to discuss their approach to screenwriting, and the experience of being handpicked by Lana Wachowski to co-write the feverishly anticipated, trilogy-busting latest instalment of her iconic franchise.

Aleksandar Hemon
Aleksandar Hemon is the author of The Lazarus Project, The Making of Zombie Wars, and a few other books of fiction and nonfiction. With David Mitchell and Lana Wachowski he has worked on the scripts for the Netflix show Sense8 and The Matrix Resurrection. He produces music as Cielo Hemon, and teaches at Princeton University.
David Mitchell
David Mitchell is a widely-acclaimed novelist. His novels, which include Ghostwritten and Cloud Atlas, have won many awards and established his reputation as a master prose stylist. His latest book is The Bone Clocks.
David was born in 1969 and grew up in West Country in the UK. His first novel, Ghostwritten, was published in 1999. It was awarded the Mail on Sunday/John Llewellyn Rhys Prize for the best book by an author under 35 and was shortlisted for The Guardian First Book Award.
His second novel, number9dream, followed in 2001 and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize as well as the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. In 2003, he was selected as one of Granta’s Best of Young British novelists. Cloud Atlas, published in 2004, won the British Book Awards Best Literary Fiction, the South Bank Show Literature Prize, the Richard & Judy Best Read of the Year and was shortlisted for six awards including the Man Booker Prize. In 2006, Black Swan Green was long listed for the Man Booker Prize. In 2010, The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet was short-listed for the Man Booker Prize and won The Commonwealth Writers’ Prize Best Book category for South Asia and Europe regions.
After living in Japan for several years, David Mitchell now lives in Ireland with his wife and two children.
Maria Lewis
Maria Lewis is a best-selling author, screenwriter and pop culture etymologist. Her eight-book Supernatural Sisters series has been published internationally by Little Brown and includes the Aurealis Award-winning The Witch Who Courted Death. As a screenwriter, she has worked on projects for Netflix, AMC, Nickelodeon, DC Comics, SBS, Stan and more. She's also the writer, producer, and host of audio documentaries The Phantom Never Dies - about the first superhero - and Josie and the Podcats - about the 2001 cult film.
