Join us to celebrate the young people who led us through the year that was, and look towards the future to come. This gala event brings together Victoria’s brightest and most inspiring young voices to share powerful stories, speeches, and performances from 2021, and will feature the winners of the 2021 OutLoud poetry slam, the 2021 Plain English Speaking Awards and the 2021 Kill Your Darlings School Writing Prize.
At the end of another challenging year, particularly for students and educators, we’ll reflect on the extraordinary creativity and passion displayed by the teens coming of age in a world standing still. We’ll also provide a sneak peek at the Wheeler Education events we’re most looking forward to in 2022.
Let's toast to hope, resilience and the power of teens to change the world. Bring on the new year! Hosted by Tierney Khan.
Tierney Khan has always been passionate about using words to express her opinions and to stand up for what she believes in. In 2020 she became the VCAA Plain English Speaking Award Victorian State Champion with a speech titled ‘Not another speech about feminism’, and has since utilised those skills in the multiple events she has been a part of through The Wheeler Centre.
In addition, an article she wrote on her experience of being of mixed race in Australia was published by Rosie, a blog run by the Victorian Women’s Trust. Coming from a multi-ethnic background, Tierney has personally experienced many of the issues faced by young female Australians of colour, and she channels those experiences to help drive her actions.
