In partnership with Perth Festival, join us for a special online event with Ethiopian-American writer Maaza Mengiste, author of the 2020 Booker Prize shortlisted The Shadow King. Set in Ethiopia during the 1935 invasion by Mussolini, The Shadow King catalogues the efforts of a brave battalion of women who took up arms to defend their country.
Mengiste will appear via live stream in conversation with author and curator of the literature and ideas program at Perth Festival, Sisonke Msimang.

Maaza Mengiste
Maaza Mengiste was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A Fulbright Scholar and professor in the MFA in Creative Writing and Literary Translation program at Queens College, she is the author of The Shadow King and Beneath the Lion's Gaze, named one of the Guardian's Ten Best Contemporary African Books. Her work can be found in the New Yorker, Granta, and the New York Times, among other publications. She lives in New York City.
Sisonke Msimang
Sisonke Msimang is the author of Always Another Country: A memoir of exile and home and The Resurrection of Winnie Mandela: A biography of survival. She is a South African writer whose work is focussed on race, gender and democracy. She has written for a range of international publications including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Guardian, Newsweek and Al Jazeera. Msimang is the curator of the literature and ideas program at Perth Festival.
