In Melbourne, Australian Rules football is a way of of life and, for many, a religion. The phenomenally successful launch of the AFLW means football is more inclusive, and more democratic, than ever before.
Can we take lessons from the greatest game – and the greatest sporting culture – in human history and use them to transform our democracy? What if our elected representatives behaved more like our most inspiring footy figureheads? If Australian Rules football is truly the ultimate leveller, how can we apply the values of the game to kick goals across other areas of our society?

Akec Makur Chuot is a South Sudanese former AFLW player and Richmond FC VFLW player. She also works for AFL Victoria as a multicultural development officer as part of the AFL Sportsready traineeship program. She was raised by her single mother in a family of seven and for twelve years they lived in Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya.
