Ghosts, secrets, travel and adventure – Gabrielle Wang’s spooky, page-turning young adult novel A Ghost in My Suitcase is now a thrilling theatre production.
It’s the story of 13-year-old Celeste, who travels to China to visit her grandmother and uncovers a family secret there. Ultimately, Celeste must learn to make use of her strange, powerful gift as a ghost-hunter.
Alongside the show’s run at Melbourne International Arts Festival, the book’s author Gabrielle Wang will appear at the Wheeler Centre to talk about the story’s journey from page to stage. She’ll also discuss the story’s themes of culture, identity and the paranormal, followed by an interactive writing workshop. Suitable for ages 8+ yrs.

Gabrielle Wang
Gabrielle Wang is an author and illustrator born in Melbourne of Chinese heritage and the Australian Children’s Laureate for 2022 and 2023. Her maternal great grandfather came to Victoria during the Gold Rush and her father from Shanghai. Her stories are a blend of Chinese and Western culture with a touch of fantasy.
She has written more than twenty books for young readers, with sales of over 170,000 copies. Her most recent book, Zadie Ma and the Dog Who Chased the Moon was released in June 2022. Many of her books have been shortlisted for awards, from the Prime Minister’s Award to children’s choice awards such as the Yabba and Koala Awards. One of Gabrielle’s most popular books A Ghost in My Suitcase won the 2009 Aurealis Award and was made into a stage play by Barking Gecko Theatre in 2018.
