Find it hard to keep up with The Next Big Thing in books and writing? We’re here to help. The Next Big Thing is all about showcasing exciting new writers – those we believe are ones to watch.
Each month, we’ll focus on a different Australian state or territory. We started with our home base of Victoria in March, New South Wales in April, and South Australia in May. In June, it's Queensland's turn.
This is a golden opportunity to discover the work of writers hand-picked by us from around Australia, in the cosy surrounds of The Moat, where you can enjoy a drink and a bite as you’re entertained and enlightened.

In June, meet Queensland writers Trent Jamieson, Bri Lee, Sally Piper and Sarah Holland-Batt.

Trent Jamieson
Trent Jamieson is a teacher, bookseller and writer of science fiction and fantasy, including the Death Works series. He has twice won Aurealis Awards for his short stories. He lives in Brisbane.
Bri Lee
Bri Lee is an author and freelance writer. Her journalism has appeared in publications such as The Monthly, The Saturday Paper, Guardian Australia and Crikey. Her first book, Eggshell Skull, won Biography of the Year at the ABIA Awards, the People's Choice Award at the Victorian Premier's Literary Awards, and was longlisted for the 2019 Stella Prize. She is also a non-practicing lawyer and continues to engage in legal research and issues-based advocacy.
Sally Piper
Sally Piper’s debut novel, Grace’s Table, was shortlisted for the 2011 Queensland Premier's Literary Awards in the Emerging Queensland Author category. She has had short stories, poetry and non-fiction articles published in Australia and the UK, appearing in writing journals, literary magazines and the Weekend Australian. She currently lives in Brisbane with her husband and two sons.
Sally was formerly a nurse; she lived in the UK for nine years before returning to Brisbane to complete a Postgraduate Diploma and Master’s Degree in Creative Writing at QUT, where she was supervised by Kristina Olsson.
Sarah Holland-Batt
Sarah Holland-Batt was born in Southport, Queensland. She is the recipient of the WG Walker Memorial Fulbright Scholarship, Yaddo and MacDowell fellowships, and an Australia Council Literature Residency at the BR Whiting Studio in Rome, among other honours.
Her first book Aria (UQP, 2008) won the Thomas Shapcott Poetry Prize, the Arts ACT Judith Wright Award and the FAW Anne Elder Award, and was shortlisted in the New South Wales Premier’s Kenneth Slessor Prize and the Queensland Premier’s Judith Wright Calanthe Award. The Hazards (UQP, June 2015) is her second collection of poetry.
She holds an MFA from New York University, and First Class Honours in Literature and an MPhil in English from the University of Queensland. She is presently a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at the Queensland University of Technology.
