This is a unique chance to learn just how much journalism is changing from a group of decorated journalists who are living that change. Between them, our crack team of panellists have decades of experience in the industry. They will discuss how journalism now differs from when they were starting out and what they have learned over the course of their careers.
This is more than an extended recap of old glories through rose-coloured glasses. Our panellists are still involved in the media industry, and a key focus will be discussing where journalism is heading – and what they wish they knew about the new media world.

Andrew Dodd
Andrew Dodd is the director of the Centre for Advancing Journalism at the University of Melbourne. He has been a journalist for more than 25 years, working in radio, TV, print and online.
He was a broadcaster at ABC Radio National, where he presented many of the network’s programs and founded the Media Report. He was a national reporter at ABC TV’s 7.30 Report and a business and media reporter at the Australian newspaper. He is co-host of the Media Files podcast for the Conversation.
Jim Middleton
Jim Middleton has been reporting national and international affairs since 1970, first for the ABC and now as a correspondent for Sky News. For two decades, he was ABC Political Editor in Canberra – covering Prime Ministers Hawke, Keating and Howard.
He was ABC North America correspondent in New York and Washington from 1980–1986, and has reported from every country in North, South and Southeast Asia – except North Korea. From 2008 to 2014, he presented Newsline and The World, broadcasting to and from Asia on Australia Network TV.
From 2008 until 2015, he was a member of the board of the Australia-Thailand Institute for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He is a Vice Chancellor’s Fellow at the University of Melbourne.
Ramona Koval
Ramona Koval is a writer who has worked as a journalist and broadcaster. Her most recent books are A Letter to Layla: Travels to our Deep Past and Near Future, Bloodhound: Searching For My Father, and By the Book: A Reader’s Guide to Life (all published by Text). She was the editor of two volumes of Best Australian Essays (Black Inc.). Her notable literary interviews are collected in Speaking Volumes: Conversations with Remarkable Writers (Scribe).
From 2006 to 2011 she presented Radio National’s Book Show, and before that a series of ABC Radio programs since the 1980s, including the iconic Books and Writing. She has written for the Age, the Australian, The Saturday Paper, and many international literary publications and made radio documentaries for ABC and BBC World Service. She is currently an Honorary Fellow at Deakin University.

Ross Gittins
Ross Gittins is the economics editor of Sydney Morning Herald and an economic columnist for the Age. He is a winner of the Citibank Pan Asia award for excellence in financial journalism and has been a Nuffield Press fellow at Wolfson College, Cambridge, and a journalist-in-residence at the Department of Economics at the University of Melbourne.
Ross is frequently called upon to comment on the economic issues of the day and has written and contributed to many books and periodicals. His books include Gittins' Gospel, Gittinomics and The Happy Economist.
