John Marsden is one of Australia’s most beloved authors. His books, in particular the bestselling Tomorrow, When the War Began series and The Ellie Chronicles, continue to enthral new generations of readers. He has sold more than four million books worldwide and written 30 novels.
His most recent book was Hamlet: A Novel, which reimagined the Shakespearian tragedy for a contemporary Australian audience. John is also the patron of youth arts organisation Express Media.
The John Marsden Prize for Young Australian Writers is an annual award designed to assist young people in the creation of literary work, which John has funded since 2005. As this year’s award is thrown open for entries, John will appear in conversation to talk about his novels and the importance of supporting young writers.

John Marsden has written more than 40 books, mostly for teenagers and children, including Tomorrow When the War Began, So Much to Tell You, and Letters from the Inside. He has sold over five million books worldwide, and has won every major award in Australia for young people's fiction. South of Darkness, written for adults, won the Christina Stead Award for Best Novel of 2015. John's passionate interest in education led him to start two schools, Candlebark, on a vast forested estate near Romsey Victoria, and Alice Miller, at Macedon, a Year 7-12 school with a particular emphasis on the creative arts. The two schools enrol 380 students in 2019.
