All of our lives have soundtracks. We cherish certain songs that have meant something to us in our lives, and lyrics that have helped us through tough times and inspired us to do better, or think differently. Similarly, most of us have a mental shortlist of seminal books, short stories or poems that have made a difference to us – pieces of writing that have formed who we are.
Who do our favourite writers listen to? What do the musicians we admire love to read? In the second instalment of Words and Music, debut novelist Hannah Kent, whose book Burial Rites has been an international sensation, is joined by ARIA-award-nominated singer/songwriter Lior, whose first album Autumn Flow is one of the most successful Australian releases in recent history.
Hannah will tell us about two pieces of music that have inspired her work as a writer, while Lior reveals two pieces of writing that have helped shape his musical direction. We eavesdrop on their exchange of treasures, and the conversation that ensues.

Lior
Lior Attar, better known simply as Lior, is an independent Israeli-Australian singer-songwriter based in Melbourne.
His first album, Autumn Flow, was recorded and released independently, to critical acclaim. His other albums include Corner of an Endless Road, Compassion and Scattered Reflections.
Hannah Kent
Hannah Kent's debut novel, Burial Rites (2013), was translated into over thirty languages and won the ABIA Literary Fiction Book of the Year, the Indie Awards Debut Fiction Book of the Year, and the Victorian Premier's People's Choice Award. It was shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction, the Stella Prize, the Guardian First Book Award, and the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. Her second novel, The Good People, was shortlisted for the Walter Scott Award for Historical Fiction, the Readings Prize for New Australian Fiction, and the ABIA Literary Fiction Book of the Year. Hannah's latest novel, Devotion, was published in 2021, and her original feature film, Run Rabbit Run, directed by Daina Reid and starring Sarah Snook, is currently in production with Carver Films.

Genevieve Lacey is a recorder virtuoso, serial collaborator and artistic director, with a significant recording catalogue and a career as an international soloist. She creates large-scale collaborative works across radio, film, dance, theatre and public art, and has premiered scores of works, written for her.
She’s represented Australia as a cultural ambassador at the Lindau International Convention of Nobel Laureates, played for the Queen in Westminster Abbey, performed as a concerto soloist in the BBC Proms, in prisons and communities in remote Australia, and at the opening night of the London Jazz Festival.
Genevieve is Chair of the Australian Music Centre, Artistic Director of FutureMakers, artistic advisor for UKARIA and Melbourne Recital Centre’s 2018 Artist in Residence.
