Join us to celebrate the launch of the fabulous Emerging Writers' Festival program 2012. Three writers from a wide range of genres discuss the art of storytelling, and how they create compelling narrative whether they’re building new sci-fi worlds or surreptitiously drawing patrons at the NGV. Chaired by Triple R’s Ben Birchall, and featuring highlights of the EWF Program from director Lisa Dempster, this event also features Oslo Davis, Mel Campbell and Max Barry.

Mel Campbell
Mel Campbell is a freelance journalist and critic who co-hosts the fortnightly literature and culture podcast The Rereaders. She is a columnist on writing at Overland magazine, and a university lecturer and writer-for-hire on film, TV and media. Her first book was the nonfiction investigation Out of Shape: Debunking Myths about Fashion and Fit (2013), and she’s currently co-writing a second romantic comedy novel with Anthony Morris; their first was The Hot Guy (2017).
Lisa Dempster
Lisa Dempster is Executive Manager of Public Participation at Yarra Plenty Regional Library.
Lisa was previously Artistic Director/CEO of Melbourne Writers Festival. In 2017 she presented Jaipur Literature Festival Melbourne as part of AsiaTOPA. Prior to joining MWF, Lisa was Artistic Director/CEO of Emerging Writers’ Festival, and Founding Director of its innovative online programming arm, EWFdigital (now Digital Writers' Festival). In 2012, Lisa undertook an Asialink residency with the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival in Bali. She is a former Chair of Right Now Inc.
Lisa has travelled widely in search of literary and other adventures. Neon Pilgrim is her first memoir.
Oslo Davis
Oslo Davis is an illustrator, cartoonist and artist who has drawn for a number of organisations worldwide, including the New York Times, the Age, the Monthly, Meanjin, SBS and the Guardian.
He has also been commissioned to draw for the National Gallery of Victoria, the Golden Plains music festival, State Library Victoria and Melbourne Writers Festival, among many others. Oslo’s latest book is Overheard - The Art of Eavesdropping.
Max Barry
Max Barry is the author of the novels Syrup (an LA Times Best Book of the Year), Jennifer Government (a New York Times Notable Book), and Company (a New York Times bestseller), and the web serial Machine Man.
He is also creator of the online political game NationStates, which has been played by over two million people.
His next novel, Lexicon, will be published in 2013.
He is 39 and lives in Melbourne with his wife and two daughters.
Ben Birchall
Ben Birchall is a writer, broadcaster and creative director who has worked in radio, advertising and digital publishing. He hosted 3RRR FM’s Breakfasters from 2009-2012 and is currently the host of Ingredipedia – a factual food fight podcast that consistently tops the iTunes Australia food charts. His writing has appeared in the Age, Smith Journal and Frankie and his advertising work for clients like NAB, Mars, CUB and the Wheeler Centre has won awards internationally.
