Professor Timothy Clark is one of the world’s most respected art historians. Currently the Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of York, he is also the author of a series of books on the social character and formal dynamics of modern art. Clark’s works have redefined the practice of art history, suggesting a new emphasis that moves away from questions of style and iconography and considering modern paintings as an articulation of the social and political conditions of modern life.

This formidable thinker, however, has more to him than might at first meet the eye. Professor Timothy Clark is also TJ Clark, poet. In a recent edition of the London Review of Books, Clark’s biographical note beside a new poem read simply: ‘TJ Clark ought to be finishing a book on Picasso, but is finding London distracting.’ He talks to the Wheeler Centre about his dual intellectual life, and distractions of the mind.
