Over six sessions, the Wheeler Centre comes to the Festival with big conversations about big questions. In this session some of our finest writers discuss tackling death and mortality on the page, how do they tread the line between the universal and the individual experience?

Brenda Walker is a novelist and Professor of English at the University of Western Australia.
Brenda Walker is the author of the novels Crush, One More River, Poe’s Cat and The Wing of Night. The latter won the 2006 Nita B Kibble Award and the 2007 Asher Literary Award, and was shortlisted for the 2006 Miles Franklin Award. Brenda Walker is also a critic, essayist and editor, and teaches at the University of Western Australia, where she is Professor of the English Department. She was the winner of the 2010 Nettie Palmer Prize for Non-fiction in the Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards.
Born in Hamilton in western Victoria in 1953, Shane Maloney is one of Australia’s most popular novelists. His award-winning and much-loved Murray Whelan series – Stiff, The Brush-Off, Nice Try, The Big Ask, Something Fishy and Sucked In – has been published around the world.
In 1996, The Brush-Off won the Ned Kelly Prize for Crime Fiction. In 2004, Stiff and The Brush-Off were made into telemovies starring David Wenham as Murray Whelan. In 2009, Shane Maloney was presented with the Crime Writers’ Association of Australia Lifetime Achievement Award.
