Australia’s one true poet laureate has finally committed his own story to paper. The 100 chapters which make up Paul Kelly’s How to Make Gravy share the tales and personal stories behind 100 of his songs from the previous three decades. Joined in conversation by the incomparable Robert Forster, Paul Kelly imparts his unique perspective on the songwriter’s art – from the point of inspiration to writing, honing, collaborating, performing, recording and reworking.
Celebrating How to Make Gravy, a memoir like no other, this will be a truly unique literary event.

Paul Kelly
Paul Kelly was born in Adelaide, one of nine children, in 1955. He wrote his first song in 1976 and has been making records since 1978, over thirty to date. He has collaborated with many other songwriters and written music for film and theatre. His prose has appeared in Meanjin, The Monthly, Rolling Stone and the Age, and in 2010 he published a ‘mongrel memoir’, How to Make Gravy. Love is Strong as Death: Poems chosen by Paul Kelly was published in 2019. His most recent albums are 2019’s Thirteen Ways to Look at Birds and 2020's Please Leave Your Light On, with Paul Grabowsky.
Robert Forster
As one of the founding members of the much loved Australian group The Go-Betweens, Robert Forster is one of Australia’s iconic musicians.
He has released 9 albums with The Go-Betweens and 4 solo albums of original material. His last solo album The Evangelist, released in 2008, received 4 and 5 star reviews the world over and was nominated as one of the albums of the year by the influential Uncut magazine in the UK.
In 2005 Forster began writing music criticism for The Monthly magazine. By 2006 he was awarded the prestigious Pascal Prize for Critical Writing. His work has also been anthologised in the New York edited Best Music Writing 2007, and The Best Australian Essays 2009.
