Maude Davey


Maude Davey has been making work in and out of Melbourne for more than thirty years. She trained at VCA and appears in films, on television and on stage with reasonable regularity. In the nineties she, like all of Australia, was inspired by visiting Japanese companies, including Sankai Juku and Dai Rakuda Kan, and she participated in several training and cultural exchange projects including with Yoko Ashikawa. From 1993 to 1998 she trained in Suzuki Technique with the Not Yet It’s Difficult performance troupe under the leadership of David Pledger. This work, the discipline and the approach to performance she learned over this time has informed her work in Contemporary Variety and New Performance ever since.

Her show Retro Futurismus, has toured to Sydney, Darwin, Western Australia and Brisbane and was nominated for 5 Green Room Awards in 2016. She was a core member of The Burlesque Hour/Glory Box ensemble for Finucane & Smith from 2004 until 2013, when she ‘retired’ her Burlesque acts with her acclaimed autobiographical retrospective, My Life In the Nude. She also writes and directs and has a Masters in Writing for Performance from VCA. Recent directing work includes: Fish! For the Rollercoaster Ensemble (2017);Oh! What a Lovely War, Mate! by Nick Enright after Joan Littlewood, for VCA Music Theatre (2016); My Life in Boxes, Gravity Dolls, (2014); I am not a Unicorn, by Emma J Hawkins (2015) and plus sign attached, a collaboration between VCA School of Drama Living Positive, about stigma surrounding HIV (2014). She was Artistic Director of Vitalstatistix Theatre Company in Adelaide between 2002 and 2007, and of Melbourne Workers Theatre, 2008/2009.
