The quarantine-cooking crazes of 2020 – from sourdough starters to dalgona coffee and cloud bread – have brought new ingredients, new culinary enthusiasms, new online communities and new foul-smelling catastrophes into our lives.
Even those of us who haven't embraced the trends have been cooking at home more – out of financial necessity, boredom or pure pleasure. How has this bizarre year changed our attitudes towards cooking in the home? Has it elevated the status and appreciation of home-cooking, traditionally women's work, during this time when restaurants are closed?
For our final Broadly Speaking conversation of the year, we’ll bring together three brilliant cooks and food writers, Julia Busuttil Nishimura (A Year of Simple Family Food) Ixta Belfrage (Ottolenghi FLAVOUR) and Hawa Hassan (In Bibi's Kitchen). They’ll discuss cravings, cultures and cooking communities in 2020 with host Brodie Lancaster.
The Broadly Speaking series is proudly supported by Krystyna-Campbell Pretty AM and family.
Our online bookseller for this event will be Neighbourhood Books.
Ixta taught herself to cook by absorbing food traditions and flavours in different corners of the globe –from Italy (where she spent her formative childhood years) to Brazil (where her mother is from) to Mexico (where some of her family lived). After running her own catering operation and market stall selling tacos in London, she then began her formal culinary career at Ottolenghi’s NOPI restaurant. Soon after she moved to the Test Kitchen, where she has worked for Yotam Ottolenghi for four years, contributing to his columns in the Guardian and the New York Times. Ixta lives in London, where she makes regular guest chef appearances in some of the city’s best restaurants. Ottolenghi Flavour is her first book.
Hawa Hassan was born in a time of war in Somalia and at the age of four moved with her family to a U.N. refugee camp. In that difficult environment, her mother worked miracles to keep her five children safe, fed and educated. Eventually Hawa's mother was able to make her way to an apartment in Nairobi, Kenya, and three years after that, she made the painful decision to send Hawa to Seattle to live with a family friend. It would be 15 years before Hawa saw her family again.
Hawa is the founder and CEO of Basbaas Sauce, a line of condiments inspired by her country of origin, Somalia. Hawa and her brand have been featured in Forbes, the New York Times, the Observer, Grub Street, Vogue, The Cut, Eater, and more.
Hawa’s first book is In Bibi’s Kitchen:The Recipes and Stories of Grandmothers from the Eight African Countries that Touch the Indian Ocean, written with Julia Turshen.
