Philosophy could be considered the most vital educational tool to endure from the ancient world. Yet it’s rarely taught or employed as a way to understand what’s happening around us today.
In his most recent books, including How to Think About Exercise and Philosophy in the Garden, Damon Young explained how philosophy is more relevant than ever to our lives. In this enlightening discussion, Damon and fellow philosopher (and science-fiction author) Russell Blackford will examine how emerging technologies and schools of thought are combining to map out a fascinating future for the human mind.
This entertaining event will cover all the big issues, from faith to time travel, graphic novels to superhero movies, as our guests run the gamut of how philosophy interacts with technology, religion and humanity in films, books and our daily lives.

Russell Blackford
Dr Russell Blackford is a philosopher, literary critic, editor, and author. His many books include 50 Voices of Disbelief: Why We Are Atheists (co-edited with Udo Schuklenk), Freedom of Religion and the Secular State, 50 Great Myths About Atheism (co-authored with Udo Schuklenk), and Humanity Enhanced: Genetic Choice and the Challenge for Liberal Democracies.
Intelligence Unbound: The Future of Uploaded and Machine Minds (co-edited with Damien Broderick) will be published in 2014.
Russell is a prolific essayist and commentator whose interests include legal and political philosophy, bioethics, philosophy of religion, and debates involving visions of the human future.
He is a conjoint lecturer in the School of Humanities and Social Science at the University of Newcastle, editor-in-chief of The Journal of Evolution and Technology, and a laureate of the International Academy of Humanism.
Damon Young
Damon Young is a prize-winning philosopher and writer. He is the author of ten books in English and translation, including The Art of Reading, How to Think About Exercise, Philosophy in the Garden and Distraction. Young is also the author of several popular children’s books, including My Brother is a Beast and My Sister is a Superhero.
