With each year that passes, Australia consistently produces a wealth of new literary talent. From debut novelists to short-story writers, memoirists to poets, we are truly living in a golden age for the written word.
How to keep up? It’s simple. Once a month, head on down to The Next Big Thing, where you will hear from and meet four exciting new authors, and maybe a few who’ve been around for a while but haven’t had the exposure they deserve. These are the literary stars of tomorrow. Come and hear from them today.
Luke Ryan is a comedian and journalist whose memoir about surviving cancer (twice) is A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Chemo.
Sean Watson is an editor at Farrago and Voiceworks. He is working on fiction and literary journalism.
Anna George has worked in the legal world as well as the film and television industries, and has written feature film scripts.
Tom Trumble is the author of three books: Unholy Pilgrims, Rescue at 2100 Hours and his latest, Tomorrow We Escape.

Tom Trumble
Tom Trumble has worked in journalism, policy development and book retailing. He is the author of Unholy Pilgrims (2011) and Rescue at 2100 Hours (2013), both published by Penguin.
He graduated with honours in history, and has also studied music and journalism. In addition to writing books, Tom is a freelance copywriter based in Melbourne.
Sean Watson
Sean Watson is an editor and sometimes-writer living in Melbourne’s west. He is an editor of Farrago magazine at the University of Melbourne, and a poetry editor for Voiceworks, a literary journal for people under 26.
He is also a poetry editor for Fireflies, an upcoming film zine with each issue focusing on two different directors.
Anna George
Anna George is a Melbourne-based writer. Initially trained as a lawyer, Anna has worked in the legal world as well as the film and television industries. What Came Before is Anna’s first novel; she is currently working on her second, set on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. Both books are to be published by Penguin Australia.
Anna has studied professional writing and editing and professional screenwriting at Melbourne’s RMIT. She has also written feature film scripts. Two of her scripts received development funding from Film Victoria and Screen Australia.
Luke Ryan
Luke Ryan is a freelance writer, comedian and man about town. He writes short-form non-fictionwith a comic edge and is about to release his debut book,A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Chemo, a comedy memoir about having had cancer a couple of times, due for release through Affirm Press in July 2014.
Luke’s work has appeared in The Vine, Smith Journal, Crikey, The Lifted Brow, Kill Your Darlings, Time Out and many publications.
