Tash Aw’s third – and ‘most personal’ – novel, Five Star Billionaire, follows four Malaysian characters trying to make it in the new China, where the megacity of Shanghai is the new New York.
Aw’s debut, The Harmony Silk Factory, won a Commonwealth Writers Prize and was longlisted for the Booker. The Guardian has dubbed him ‘part of a rising generation of South-Asian writers who are remapping the region with little heed to existing national frontiers’.
Five Star Billionaire is an elegant and sharply contemporary look at a resurgent and fiercely capitalist China in a new century – and the opportunities (and hidden costs) it holds.
Tash Aw will be joined on stage by Nikki Anderson.
