We still don’t talk much about death. But when Susan Wyndham’s mother died she found comfort in talking to other people who had lost a parent, as a way to understand her grief. Some of those conversations developed into the book My Mother, My Father: On Losing a Parent, with essays by 14 writers including Helen Garner, Thomas Keneally, Mandy Sayer and David Marr.

In this talk, Susan draws on her own and other contributors' experiences. How do we handle the death of our parents? How does it change us? And how might we do better?

Lunchbox/Soapbox

Sometimes there’s nothing better than a good rant. Every Thursday, the Wheeler Centre hosts an old-fashioned Speakers’ Corner in the middle of the city, where writers and thinkers can have their say on the topics that won’t let them sleep at night.

Featuring some of our most compelling voices across just about every sector of human endeavour you can imagine, the themes dominating Lunchbox/Soapbox are proudly idiosyncratic. BYO lunch. Ideas provided.
