Our first ever event was a Debut Monday. Three years on, it’s still going strong, introducing new Australian talent each month.
Whether it’s meeting Australia’s latest wunderkind or hearing an unknown quantity strike a bold new path, Debut Mondays is your chance to discover your next favourite author.
You’ll meet a selection of new voices – from Victoria and beyond – including a special guest in each session from Voiceworks magazine.
Pop down to the MOAT, our resident cafe and bar, to grab a drink or a meal – and be nourished and entertained by the pick of our latest storytelling crop.
This month’s writers are Terry Jaensch, Laura Jean McKay, Vanessa Russell and Alice Whitmore.

Alice Whitmore
Alice Whitmore is a Melbourne-based student, writer and translator. Shortlisted for the 2012 Monash Prize, her writing has been published by Voiceworks, Penguin Specials and Egg Poetry. Her translations of Mexican poetry have been published in The AALITRA Review and Reinvention Journal.
Vanessa Russell
Vanessa Russell used to read the entire Bible once a year including the New Testament twice. Now she doesn’t. Her memoir, My Abduction Holiday, is forthcoming from Hardie Grant, and her debut novel, Holy Bible is out with Sleepers in 2013.
She has a PhD from University of Melbourne on the topic: ‘Losing My Religion: Studies in Deconversion’. Her work has been published in Meanjin, Island and Harpur Palate, among other places, and
Laura Jean McKay
Laura Jean McKay is the author of Holiday in Cambodia (Black Inc. 2013), shortlisted for three national book awards in Australia. Her work appears in Meanjin, Overland, Best Australian Stories, the Saturday Paper, and the North American Review. Laura is a lecturer in creative writing at Massey University, with a PhD from the University of Melbourne focusing on literary animal studies. She is the ‘animal expert’ presenter on ABC Listen’s Animal Sound Safari. The Animals in That Country (Scribe 2020) is her debut novel.
Terry Jaensch
Terry Jaensch is an Australian poet, actor and monologist. His first book of poetry, Buoy (FIP) was shortlisted for the Anne Elder Award by the Fellowship of Australian Writers.
Terry has worked ¨as writer-in-community and poetry editor (Cordite), artistic director of the 2005 Emerging Writers’ Festival, a poetry teache,r and in a variety of arts/community and local government programming positions.
He was awarded an Asialink residency in Singapore where, with poet Cyril Wong, he co-authored the volume Excess Baggage & Claim (Transit Lounge). He has won awards including the Melbourne Poet’s Union International Poetry Prize, the Victorian Writers’ Centre Poetry Slam and was on the winning team of the Melbourne Writers’ Festival Poetry Slam.
