Affect the whole term of their being.’ On the day that his new book 1835: the Founding of Melbourne and the Conquest of Australia is to be launched, James Boyce will introduce you to the forgotten founding fathers of Melbourne, and encourage speculation on how the unique circumstances of Melbourne’s birth might impact on how the city imagines itself today.

James Boyce is the author of 1835: The Founding of Melbourne and the Conquest of Australia, published in July by Black Inc., and of Van Diemen’s Land, which won the 2009 Tasmania Book Prize and the 2008 Colin Roderick Award. He is an honorary research associate at the University of Tasmania’s Centre for Environmental Studies, and is based in Hobart.
