Ethical advertising. Oxymoron? Few professions inspire such an immediate association with trickery and flim flam as advertising, but this much scrutinised media realm has, perhaps, as well defined a set of ethical rules and guidelines as any sphere of public life.
Our panel of ethicists and ad-folk, including Jon Casimir, executive producer and author of The Gruen Transfer and chaired by Ben Birchall, unpick the principles that underpin the hard sell.

But most recently created a baby girl, now 1, named Luxe, who is officially her toughest client. In her 16 year career she has won awards internationally and nationally, and been a judge at Cannes, Clio, AWARD and locally.
Cordelia Fine
Dr Cordelia Fine is an academic psychologist and writer.
She has a background in psychology (Oxford University) and cognitive neuroscience (University College London). Cordelia is currently a Senior Research Associate at the Centre for Values, Ethics & Agency at Macquarie University. She is the author of A Mind of Its Own: How your brain distorts and deceives and Delusions of Gender: The real science behind sex differences.
Jon Casimir
Jon Casimir is co-creator of The Gruen Transfer, which he writes and produces for Zapruder’s other films
Before Gruen, he was a producer for Enough Rope on ABC Television. And before that, he wrote for the Sydney Morning Herald for a long time. While there, he was also responsible for the creation of the smh.com.au news site. Jon has written four books and edited another six. He has co-written and produced one feature length documentary, and dabbled as a radio presenter at ABC702. He lives and works in Sydney, but would be happier somewhere with a nicer climate.
Ben Birchall
Ben Birchall is a writer, broadcaster and creative director who has worked in radio, advertising and digital publishing. He hosted 3RRR FM’s Breakfasters from 2009-2012 and is currently the host of Ingredipedia – a factual food fight podcast that consistently tops the iTunes Australia food charts. His writing has appeared in the Age, Smith Journal and Frankie and his advertising work for clients like NAB, Mars, CUB and the Wheeler Centre has won awards internationally.
