Texts in the City

There comes a point, when a book or film becomes a text, that study can take the joy out of reading. Every Tuesday afternoon in terms one and two, we try to rediscover a sense of love and wonder about the texts on the VCE English list.
This week, it’s The Secret River by Kate Grenville.
Tony Birch is the author of Ghost River, which won the 2016 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Indigenous Writing, and Blood, which was shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Award. He is also the author of Shadowboxing, and three short story collections – Father’s Day, The Promise and Common People.
Tony is a frequent contributor to ABC local and national radio, and a regular guest at writers’ festivals. He lives in Melbourne and is a Senior Research Fellow at Victoria University.
Tony Wilson is an author of twelve books, as well as writing columns and features for the Age, Good Weekend and The Monthly. He was part of the Breakfasters on Triple R for six years, and is still a regular visitor to both Triple R and 774 ABC Melbourne.
Studying a book or film can be a short-cut to consigning it to boredom. But our Texts in the City series – a gift to students, their teachers and lifelong learners – brings the VCE English and Literature lists to life.
Each week, our hosts – authors Lili Wilkinson and Tony Birch – will interview experts intimately familiar with the texts, unearthing those hidden gems that could help your essay shine.
Good luck to all VCE English and Literature students in 2013.
