Two Sides of the Story

A picture really is worth a thousand words, creating new worlds and new readers. Let us paint you a picture of the business of making picture stories with two of the craft’s leading exponents.
Roland Harvey was born in Melbourne and has always loved drawing. He trained as an architect but is best-known for his distinctive books, calendars and greeting cards.
Alison Lester grew up on a farm by the sea, and first rode a horse as a baby in her father's arms. Her picture books mix imaginary worlds with everyday life, encouraging children to believe in themselves and celebrate the differences that make them special. Alison is involved in many community art projects and spends part of every year travelling to remote Indigenous communities, using her books to help children and adults write and draw about their own lives.
Each month at the Wheeler Centre, two writers discuss the points of difference and the common experiences of a creative life. From playwrights to poets, from award-winners to emerging talent, the Victorian Writers’ Centre and the Wheeler Centre join forces to explore what aspects of being a writer are universal and which ones are unique.
