Our first ever event was a Debut Monday. Three years on, it’s still going strong, introducing new Australian talent each month.
Whether it’s meeting Australia’s latest wunderkind or hearing an unknown quantity strike a bold new path, Debut Mondays is your chance to discover your next favourite author.
You’ll meet a selection of new voices – from Victoria and beyond – including a special guest in each session from Voiceworks magazine.
Pop down to the MOAT, our resident cafe and bar, to grab a drink or a meal – and be nourished and entertained by the pick of our latest storytelling crop.
This month’s writers are Jane Rawson, Mel Campbell, Lucy Neave and Voiceworks guest Laura Woollett.
Jane Rawson wrote the novel A wrong turn at the Office of Unmade Lists, published by Transit Lounge and shortlisted for an Aurealis Award for science fiction. Ed Wright at the Australian said the book had ‘taken risks with plausibility and triumphed’ while the Adelaide Advertiser’s Patrick Allington said it was ‘one of the stranger debut novels I have read … a wacky mediation on loss and grief, on creativity, on treating the planet badly and making the best of things’.
Mel Campbell is a freelance journalist and critic who co-hosts the fortnightly literature and culture podcast The Rereaders. She is a columnist on writing at Overland magazine, and a university lecturer and writer-for-hire on film, TV and media. Her first book was the nonfiction investigation Out of Shape: Debunking Myths about Fashion and Fit (2013), and she’s currently co-writing a second romantic comedy novel with Anthony Morris; their first was The Hot Guy (2017).
Lucy Neave completed a Masters of Fine Arts in Writing in the US on a Fulbright scholarship, and has received a Varuna New Writers’ Fellowship and Australian Society of Authors mentorship.
Readers are spoilt for choice: bookshops are overflowing with the great, the good (and the rest), and it could not be harder to choose what to read next.
Let Debut Mondays be your guide to the best of new local writing. Come and have a glass of wine and discover the best new writers around.
