John Safran ON UNREST

A co-presentation with Melbourne Conversations.

Popular comedian and contrarian John Safran is known as a seeker of awkward and unusual truths. He infiltrates a secret world of madness, agitation and unrest. In this event, he’ll present his findings.

Additional performance to be confirmed.

John Safran is a documentarian and comedian, responsible for the TV series John Safran vs God, Music Jamboree, Speaking In Tongues and Race Relations. He co-hosts Sunday Night Safran (‘a babble about religion, politics and all things ethnic’) on Triple J with Father Bob Maguire.

The School of Life Melbourne Secular Sermon Series

Now, it’s not just religious folk who can get life lessons (and a good stirring of the soul) from a regular Sunday sermon.

London’s School of Life offers good ideas for everyday life – and its hugely popular Secular Sermon series arrives in Melbourne in 2013, curated by theatre producer Stephen Armstrong.

Join some of Australia’s (and the world’s) most maverick cultural figures as they explore the values we should live by, in hour-long theatrical events that will make you think, reflect and even laugh.

Subjects range from vengeance and lying, to humour and the virtues (or otherwise) of being ‘ordinary’. Expect persuasive polemics delivered with particular passion, communal singing … and possibly even sticky buns with fellow ‘parishioners’.

Whimsically pitched, but with a serious purpose, the Secular Sermons will pop up in cultural venues all around Melbourne.

The School of Life Sermons are a co-presentation between Melbourne Conversations, the City of Melbourne’s free public talks program, and The Wheeler Centre with generous support from the Trawalla Foundation.

John Safran

John Safran is an award-winning documentary-maker of provocative and hilarious takes on race, the media, religion and other issues.

John first hit TV screens in 1997 on Race Around the World (ABC TV). Both John Safran's Music Jamboree (SBS, 2002) and John Safran vs. God (SBS, 2004) won Australian Film Industry awards for Best Comedy Series and Most Original Concept, and were also nominated for Logie Awards.

Other shows include John Safran's Race Relations (ABC TV, 2009), which was nominated for two awards at the prestigious Rose d'Or Festival in Switzerland, and Speaking in Tongues (SBS, 2005–6). John also co-hosted Sunday Night Safran, a radio talk show on Triple J with cranky but beloved Catholic priest, Father Bob Maguire.
