With forecasts of 30–40 million people by 2050 and up to 60 million by 2100, Australians are becoming increasingly concerned about the impact of population growth. Heated political debates about migrants and refugees are played out almost daily in the media. Real or perceived competition for housing, food, water, services, and jobs is creating social tension and even violence.
