Richard Gill: Give Me Excess Of It
Richard Gill has worked in music and education for 50 years – and has never missed a chance to sing the praises of both. In a frank and fearless new memoir that will get tongues wagging, he shares his insights into the arts world, where he worked as music director of the Victorian Opera. In conversation with 774 ABC Melbourne’s Hilary Harper, he describes his formative experiences with music – as well as his role in the formative experiences of others – and his strong beliefs about music education in Australia.
Richard Gill is an internationally respected music educator and conductor. He has been artistic director of OzOpera, artistic director and chief conductor of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra and the adviser for the Musica Viva in Schools program. He is currently music director of Victorian Opera.
Hilary Harper has a degree in English Literature and Cultural Studies, a Graduate Diploma in Professional Writing and Editing, and 30 years’ experience in radio. She’s been at the ABC since 2005. She’s covered everything from news and current affairs to traffic reporting, arts, health, gardening, science, finance, education, relationships, parenting, and much discussion of food.
