Richard Gill: Give Me Excess Of It
Richard Gill has worked in music and education for 50 years – and has never missed a chance to sing the praises of both. In a frank and fearless new memoir that will get tongues wagging, he shares his insights into the arts world, where he worked as music director of the Victorian Opera. In conversation with 774 ABC Melbourne’s Hilary Harper, he describes his formative experiences with music – as well as his role in the formative experiences of others – and his strong beliefs about music education in Australia.
Richard Gill is an internationally respected music educator and conductor. He has been artistic director of OzOpera, artistic director and chief conductor of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra and the adviser for the Musica Viva in Schools program. He is currently music director of Victorian Opera.
From humble beginnings as 774 ABC Melbourne’s traffic reporter, where she inserted occasional haiku into the breakfast show, Hilary Harper now presents the Saturdays morning show. From food and sustainability to relationships, pets and gardening, she explores how the little things in life reveal much about us.
