You Read Me?

Listen to You Read Me?

Do adults and kids have different ideas about what makes great children’s literature?

Two of the best in the children’s book business, author Sally Rippin and author/illustrator Shaun Tan, will chat with Stevee and Keely, two young editors from children’s literary journal Early Harvest, as they explore writing, illustrating and commissioning for children.

Do authors, illustrators and editors have an imaginary reader in mind when they’re working? How can young readers become more involved in the publishing process? And why do some stories resonate more than others?

What do young bookworms really want to read? Readers of all ages are invited to hear the answer straight from the horse’s mouth.

Shaun Tan

Shaun Tan grew up in Perth and works as an artist, writer and film-maker in Melbourne, best known for illustrated books that deal with social, political and historical subjects through dream-like imagery. The Rabbits, The Red Tree, Tales from Outer Suburbia and the graphic novel The Arrival have been widely translated throughout the world and enjoyed by readers of all ages.

Shaun has also worked as a theatre designer, a concept artist for Pixar and won an Academy Award for the short animated film The Lost Thing. In 2011 he received the prestigious Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in Sweden, in recognition of his services to literature for young people. His recent titles include CicadaRules of Summer and The Singing Bones. Tales from the Inner City will be published in September 2018.

Portrait of Keely

Keely is an editorial board member of Early Harvest 2015. Think of a panda, then think of a panda that is injury-prone: this is basically Keely. She is a pro at reading, injuries and being a panda.

Portrait of Stevee

Stevee is an editorial board member of Early Harvest 2015. She is loud and MUST have an opinion on everything. Add a lot of fireworks and you have a very cool person.
