Cover Girls Uncovered
If a picture is worth a thousand words, what do the covers of books by female authors say? Headless torsos, giant lips, 50 shades of pink and pastel … why are the covers of books by women usually feminine, even when the content is not?
Bhakthi Puvanenthiran is Managing Editor of Crikey, writing mainly on politics and the media. Previously Bhakthi was a journalist and editor at the Age and Sydney Morning Herald covering arts, entertainment and business. She co-hosted the podcast Hard Bargain, is a regular media commentator and sits on the board of the National Young Writers’ Festival.
Krissy Kneen is an award-winning writer and a beloved member of the Australian literary community. She has written memoir, poetry and fiction, and her latest novel An Uncertain Grace, was shortlisted for the Stella Prize in 2018.
Her other work includes Affection, Steeplechase, Triptych and The Adventures of Holly White and the Incredible Sex Machine. Krissy’s new novel, Wintering, will be published in September 2018.
She lives in Brisbane.
Lefa Singleton Norton is a writer and activist in the fields of feminism and disability. She has been a creative producer at Express Media, an award-winning producer of live performances, and appeared at festivals including the Melbourne Writers’ Festival, Emerging Writers’ Festival, National Young Writers’ Festival and the Symposium on Emerging Media.
